  • Panning on mountains in Banff at blue sunset facing eastward

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Digitally panning at blue hour on the mountains of Banff National Park in Canada. The sun lights up the lower-level clouds which ride the steady wind just above the snowy peaks and ridges. The Canadian Rockies are home to both Banff and Jasper parks, which are situated not far from each other geographically, and are both in the Alberta province.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    15 seconds and 9 frames.

  • Over the boreal forest are the distant Northern Lights

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

The view over sub-arctic woods at night. One of the last areas this far north with any significant light pollution (man-made light that has a significant impact on the darkness of the night), the Northern Lights are observable in the distant thermosphere, around 65 miles above the Earth. This clip contains the lowest amount of transforming aurora in the entire collection.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    7 seconds and 65 frames.

  • Meadows beneath virga and other colorful clouds flowing at sunset time

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Precipitation that evaporates in the dryer air that it falls into is called Virga. These low-level fluffy and convective, as well as stratus clouds, are shown with camera facing northeast, away from the direction of the sunset. Pleasant meadows and hills underline the pink and transforming clouds, with the Virga appearing more stationary.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    14 seconds and 16 frames.

  • Night lightning illuminates passing thunderstorm – content warning for epilepsy

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

The thunderstorm moves past the frame, right to left. The lightning illuminates the cloud stochastically as the city, outside of the frame, lights the clouds from below constantly. Leaving behind some of itself as it passes overhead, the ‘cell’ is moved by outflow from other storms.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    12 seconds and 1 frame.

  • Over small sand dunes 100m away, the ocean below

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

…some fair-weather clouds in the midday blue sky. The shadows of sand dunes slowly creep longer on the sand. The ocean stretches away into the distance to the right. European beach-grass was introduced in the early 20th century- but its spread poses changes to the dune’s existence themselves. Its ability to live in sand is a double-edged sword for the local ecology. A largely cloudy Cirrus sky in the top third of the frame moves inland towards the right of the frame, but it has not yet fully shaded the foreground and beach beyond until late in the clip.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    15 seconds and 5 frames.

  • Moonlit night with heavier clouds above a desert

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

…Landscape and highway with cars headlights, comatics. Car headlights travel quickly along the highway, which is at the foot of some mountainous foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The moonlight provides illumination to the towering, massive clouds overhead, and the orangeish headlight brightening of the lower portion of clouds is observable.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    8 seconds and 10 frames.

  • Between Juniper trees, Grand Tetons range under fading pinkish high clouds

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

The finest details are shown as these mid-level clouds above the Grand Tetons mountain range peaks above the tree line, far away. The very fine texture of a smaller cloud in particular, glowing in reds and pinks, lives shortly as the sun fades after it has already set. Juniper trees frame the mountains and span the vertical axis of the frame.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    11 seconds and 14 frames.

  • In Strokkur, Iceland, thermal vents with fall trees and hillside in the background under clouds

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Near this grove of autumn trees, a many colored, a rocky and steep foothill looms to the upper-right of the frame, on which shadows of the clouds move slowly over. Nearer in the foreground, hints of steamy geysers pass quickly. The yellow trees seem to vibrate slightly in the wind.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    14 seconds and 6 frames.
