    Scene notes: … of light rays through darker clouds slowly shifting. This is a slower clip with a very short interval and faster shutter speed. Crepuscular rays shine when there is a higher humidity in one area, but not necessarily very humid in the entire observable atmosphere around the observer. As the clouds move, the shadows defining the light rays move with them. The rays trace a path from the sun to the ground, and to the observer, the angles shift more the further the light path reaches from the sun.

    Scene notes:

    … in daylight heating above distant trees. Birth of a Cumulonimbus, a rising congestus carrying enough moisture to darken and sprout rain while it grows nearer. This exemplar of a congestus, a towering Cumulus cloud that has not become a Nimbus, reaches higher and higher into the sky until the day has become cloudy with a high chance of precipitation. Often other low stratus clouds obscure clouds like this, but they are quite common.

    Scene notes: …with low meandering or desert wind. In this rapidly brightening scene that takes place in the high desert of southeast California, upper-level clouds brighten past the exposure as the sky quickly brightens. Extremely fine and subtle details of the lower parts of these mid-level clouds are illuminated from below the horizon. This is due to the fact that the Earth, round, allows the light to enter into the atmosphere at angles low. This light is shown as reddening through atmosphere, with the distinctive pinkness of a sunrise.

    Scene notes:

    The shoulders of this steep hillside or mountain side is one of many cloaked partially by rain and cloud. A significant mass of damp air gets caught on these features almost daily, due to the temperature and humidity of the island which is owed to the location of Hawaii on the Earth. A bare amount of cerulean sky is visible, but the scene is mostly cloudy.

  • Fast low-level clouds near sunset creating crepuscular rays

    Scene notes:

    A longer interval of around ten seconds is used. Clouds in the late afternoon at have enough space between them to allow sunlight through, and the humidity brings out vibrant light rays. The clouds blow quickly on the land, and as the second half of the clip goes, the light rays are observed to rapidly shift with the openings of the cloud positions. These crepuscular rays are not uncommon in partly cloudy, high humidity skies one to three hours before sunset. With days being far longer, the summer has more time and opportunity for these rays to reach through. But clouds are less common in Oregon during the summer, so often fall and spring are fair times as the day progresses, and some clouds are persisting. Far below in the frame of the clip, meadows are shadowed frequently among a forested, hilly landscape, with a lake in the far distance before the coast range of buttes and mountains.
