  • Wintery and huge mountain looms overhead

    Scene notes:

… steeped in clouds, crawling on its slopes. Rock face with rock fall, mixed with these river-shaped eroded areas called cirques, as well as the striations of comprise this mountain that starts as largely shadowed by low clouds. Bright areas of light on the slopes where the clouds break on a massive arête, far too steep for snow (late clip).

    8 seconds and 29 frames.

    Scene notes:

A rocky landscape in front of snow-capped mountains. Under a moonlit night sky, stratus clouds ascend Mt Whitney and the Sierras, but only with enough to meander. The mountain range is snowy and steep, fully lit with the moon. The night sky is starry, and in the bottom tenth of the frame, the rocky hills are at the foot of the steep mountain slopes, which have shadows from the rare cloud that makes it over the ridges.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    23 seconds and 8 frames.

  • On steep mountain cliff peaks, morning clouds grip…

    Scene notes:

… the slopes and loiter on almost no wind. One may assume on first viewing a few seconds of watching the stratus is inevitably going to override the sky, but that does not happen; instead, the clouds are caught and created on the mountain peaks. Four snowy peaks, with one dominating the left quarter, in deep snow, are intermittently covered. The other three have sheer faces too steep for any snow to cling to. The light turns pinker as time moves on.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    22 seconds and 14 frames.

Rocky Mountain National Park on a partly cloudy day looking east from a viewpoint with towering clouds just off in the distance, their shadows quickly traversing the landscape as it becomes cloudier.

  • 10 of 10 | Sierra Nevada Mountain range and midday clouds

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

The camera pans to the right. A larger aperture depth-of-field is shown. On the mountainsides, delicate clouds condense momentarily and evaporate as quickly, small and insignificant in size. Other low-level and some mid-level stratus clouds are also present. Shrubs with yellow flowers comprise much of the fore and middle ground.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    8 seconds.

  • Above Sierra range, clouds expand as the dusk darkens the sky upwards

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

The deep dark of the ‘blue hour’ that comes after sunset, with just a few spots of cloud catching glowing pink light, but the clouds continue moving in complex patterns. The mountains are having a definite effect.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    8 seconds and 18 frames.
