  • Gold storm with majestic mammatus shifts on sunset…

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

…over ocean time-lapse. Intricate and delicate, the underside of these clouds are illuminated minutes after the sun has set to the observer. How is this? The sun is below the horizon to the observer, but not to the sky above. At that moment, you would still see the sun if in an airplane at that height. You would be in its light, as are these clouds. Since these clouds are attached to a storm, their altitude could in fact be 30,000 ft or more. This would make sense, due to the low movement of the delicate parts of the cloud, which would have frozen droplets. Some lower clouds that make up lower thunderstorm bodies have a mix of frozen droplets, gaseous vapor, and liquid.

On a sliver of ocean with distant palm trees silhouetted far away, another younger storm is at the right of the lower frame portion. Blue sky persists in an area that homes other colorful clouds at higher altitudes of 45000 feet, or about 15000 m. The sun sets and the ‘mammatus’ clouds from the storm redden.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):

    Scene notes:

From a Cyan Blue to a pale dusk color, the sky turns dark at sunset. In foreground at center zooming in is an old oak tree the same color as a Hemlock. In the far background lower frame, coastal hilly shrub lands are shaded in magic hour after the light moves below horizon. Facing south at sunset a Lapis Blue.

    Scene notes:

Bright Cantaloupe highlights in the bright precipitation of these stratus clouds, and Halloween orange colors on the fading rain at right of the frame. Silhouetted bare ridges in the lower quarter, under these clouds that darken in as time progresses, the open sky a perfect Mid-blue.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    10 seconds and 15 frames.

    Scene notes:

…at dusk on Mt Tamalpais as sunset passes by. Stratocumulus clouds stretch for miles far below the serene meadow hills with creeping, windblown trees. The open sky is a ‘Hoki’ color, or a dusty-blue, and the horizon is a mix of Dusky Rose and Pale Oranges that make up the quarter of the frame. California sage brush, Chaparral, and Oaks are the main types of trees and shrubs shown.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    12 seconds and 29 frames.

… and river flowing below at sunset with traffic. Along the Sacramento River is downtown Sacramento’s skyline, its distinctive yellow tower bridge spanning the river at sunset facing east, the UAS moves laterally and backwards as cloud colors fade after the sun has set.

  • Mammatus clouds above hills darkening away at dusk in the sky

    Scene notes:

The scientific adage of ‘what goes up, must come down’ rings true in this scene where, at right, lower-level clouds rise in convection. Over this ridgeline, there are pockets of air that fall through the cloud as cold patches, creating these distinctive looking clouds. While the dire, dark gray, bizarre looking ‘mammatus’ are this size only 30-40000 ft and attached to monstrous storms, these are clearly harmless clouds.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    7 seconds and 15 frames.
