    Many clips of Precipice are like one another, and some share the same scene at different times. All Precipice clips take place on a steep drop-off, even if that drop is out of frame. They all have in common a cloud or fog layer either at below the point of view’s elevation and are at or near sunset.

    …Landscape and highway with cars headlights, comatics. Car headlights travel quickly along the highway, which is at the foot of some mountainous foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The moonlight provides illumination to the towering, massive clouds overhead, and the orangeish headlight brightening of the lower portion of clouds is observable.

    Scene notes:

    Near this grove of autumn trees, a many colored, a rocky and steep foothill looms to the upper-right of the frame, on which shadows of the clouds move slowly over. Nearer in the foreground, hints of steamy geysers pass quickly. The yellow trees seem to vibrate slightly in the wind.

    Exemplars of aiguille-shaped peaks that travel over a kilometer down, glaciers included. The clouds create crepuscular (afternoon) rays from humidity and shadows. The light shines on some of the slopes. The mountains comprise nine-tenths of the frame.

    Scene notes:

    The landscape is two-thirds of the frame, a forest of hills and ridges which extend into a vast plain. The humid air allows the radiant intensity to glow on these lands, the vapor both absorbs and emits some of the light in all directions. The sun moves lower into the dusk behind the horizon, leaving Cirrus clouds illuminated red and pink from below, and then, night falls.

    … through a forest with clouds building above. A creek flows through a Colorado forest with a butte-sized land feature in the background (right) showing between the opening of trees at the river’s command. Clouds float and meander, building, above. The evergreen coniferous forest is just behind the large creek crossing, which has stones and boulders throughout. The creek is rushing in the sunlight after shadows from the clouds clear.

    These Yellowflag Iris flowers are an exemplar of their kind. Panning past this stone covered in lichen and moss, the flowers quiver in the spring breeze on this hilltop. The ground has the shade of a conifer tree trunk moving over the grass and stones.

    Now clip NGT087. The desert night sky around the rim Canyonlands. The moon sets late in the clip, taking with it the illumination of the landscape, now trees silhouette on the hills, which comprise a fifth of the frame. and the night sky is just as starry this cloudless night.
