  • 1 of 2 | Low clouds flow smoothly on mountainous Napali coast mountains

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Some of the biggest shield volcanoes on Earth created the Hawaiian island chain, which are completely separate from the main continental plates which shape so much of the rest of our world. As such, it seems fitting for Hawaiian to be an exotic and often otherworldly place. For being so new, the islands are, mostly, so green. The verdant landscapes are covered in jungle all the way to their peaks where the cliffs are nearly sheer. The dense woods are home to so many fruiting plants like mango, tart guava berries and sweet pineapple grown for millennia by the indigenous people. With clouds flowing and appearing to get ‘tripped up’ by this peak near center-frame, fog joins the cloud and vice versa, with no clear boundary between. Every visible air current from the orographic lift effect can be seen on the outer cloud.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    9 seconds.

  • Shadows flow smoothly on mountainous Napali coast mountains

    Scene notes:

The shoulders of this steep hillside or mountain side is one of many cloaked partially by rain and cloud. A significant mass of damp air gets caught on these features almost daily, due to the temperature and humidity of the island which is owed to the location of Hawaii on the Earth. A bare amount of cerulean sky is visible, but the scene is mostly cloudy.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    7 seconds and 27 frames.

  • 1 of 3 Low clouds moving at night over mountain range in moonlight

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Sometimes a high wind gust will come along and cause the tripod to move slightly. In these rare instances, the clip may be stabilized digitally or divided in two. This shot of the Alabama Hills at night under a nearly full moon has a cut that divides the scene into two clips, one with a longer shutter speed.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    9 seconds and 78 frames.

  • 2 of 3 | Low clouds moving at night over mountain range in moonlight

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Mt Whitney is seen among its neighboring peaks in the Sierra Nevada range of mountains at night. With the long shutter speed of three seconds and an interval of five seconds and clouds quickly float overhead. The stratus clouds floating high enough fly over, the lower ones are caught and piled up on a few of the peaks. A landscape of hills made of smooth and rocks of varying sizes, from massive to minute, climbs to the left of the frame.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    6 seconds and 80 frames.

  • Clouds and shadows on distant mountain background…

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

…under clouds and shadows. Over the continental divide in Colorado, mountains deep in natural snow are unmarred by signs of society, and range from big gradual slopes to the sharpest, rocky peaks near center-frame. The upper slopes, a quarter of the frame, is snowy, and are shaded by the clouds overhead which are moving towards-camera but without momentum.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    13 seconds and 18 frames.

  • Over red rocks and foothills of Colorado, a storm…

    Scene notes:

…builds in the early day’s blue sky. A rock feature of sharp relief on the far left of the frame borders the foothills of the mountains, where Pike’s Peak is fully cloaked in growing lower clouds. A hazy morning near noon, the near landscape is cultivated greenery and roadways with signs of people walking around. The far view shows green forests and hills spanning into a cloudy horizon in Colorado.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    11 seconds.

  • On a hilltop, looking out at cloud shadows moving on fields

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

A nice spring day with modest lower-level clouds. Their fine definitions create sharp shadows to move over the woods and cypress trees below and beyond in this vast vista. All the way to the horizon the trees cover the gentle hills, which gently rise where the view limits. On the top half of the frame, the medium-small clouds are herd-like in the movements. The wind seems to caress the foreground treescape.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    21 seconds and 3 frames.

  • Lake Tahoe sunset with pink clouds with humans, boats further out

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Altocumulus Castellanus are here in the top half of the frame at sunset. Being brilliantly shined upon, they range in color from Grapefruit to shades of pale pink and sharp purple, and the clear areas of sky remain blue, comprising two thirds of the sky. The bottom half has Lake Tahoe, a boat makes an inquisitive entrance and exit, and the water moves with gentle, lapping waves. The other side of the expansive lake is the east sky, with more clouds observed.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    9 seconds and 9 frames.
