  • Morning dawn heralds glowing pink medium alt clouds…

Scene notes: …with low meandering or desert wind. In this rapidly brightening scene that takes place in the high desert of southeast California, upper-level clouds brighten past the exposure as the sky quickly brightens. Extremely fine and subtle details of the lower parts of these mid-level clouds are illuminated from below the horizon. This is due to the fact that the Earth, round, allows the light to enter into the atmosphere at angles low. This light is shown as reddening through atmosphere, with the distinctive pinkness of a sunrise.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    13 seconds and 22 frames.
  • Mid-level clouds glow briefly, flowing at dawn with the rain

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

A dawn rain cloud backlit with brilliant colors as a few of the mid-level clouds show unusual curves due to precipitation, which is responsible for the glow. Just the right amount of rainfall, a very light amount, is enough to bring out the brilliant golds, however briefly, ending on much bluer colors due to the sun ‘going behind’ clouds which moved between it and the point of view.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    8 seconds and 8 frames.

  • 2 of 2 Light shafts created by taller altocumulus…

    Scene notes:

…mid-level clouds at sunrise. UAS hovering at altitude at dawn. Altocumulus Castellanus are ideal clouds for creating light rays that persist. First, their presence in the sky indicates moisture at the medium levels. As droplets glow in the sunlight, areas of thicker cloud create the shade necessary for the ‘light ray’ to show with definition. Since Castellanus clouds have these small patches of thick density, stark sunbeams are cast toward the camera’s general point of view.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    10:25.

  • Moon sets, then the sun, over Monument Valley’s monoliths

    Scene notes:

A moonset, then a sunrise, at Monument Valley.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    11 seconds.

  • 2 of 2 | V slow light shaft moving toward POV on top Bryce Canyon

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

Capturing a moment of time at dawn in the winter among the positively red hoodoos of sandstone and dolomite, which owes their odd shapes to the erosive patterns from these rocks. Snow blankets this unusual and wild landscape, as it stretches and flattens out into the distance where a ridge separates land and sky. The sun, out of frame, rises, and with it the snow brightens, and shadows recede.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    8 seconds and 17 frames.

  • Dawn over water, a partial rainbow over inlet, near Svalbarðseyri, and Akureyri, Iceland

    View with alternate video source

    Scene notes:

On a hill view just north of Akureyri, Iceland. Looking across the inlet to mountainous landscapes in a fog layer of stratus cloud. The low clouds move along, and a partial rainbow briefly forms in the sky from precipitation. The dawn is pinkish on the low clouds, facing west at sunrise, away from the sun. A three second interval is used.
    Time-lapse length (30 fps):
    16 seconds.
